Pruning trees on private land
Occupiers of a property have a right in common law to prune branches overhanging their boundary.
You could ask the advice of a tree surgeon (arborist) if you are unsure how much pruning you can do.
The Arboricultural Association (opens new window) offer:
- guidance on how to choose a tree surgeon
- an approved contractor scheme
If a tree is:
- protected by a Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)
- in a conservation area
You must request permission to cut overhanging branches.
